The film doesn’t need flash, sex, or any other elements of a standard action film. Toby and Tanner are part of a larger system that Alberto reminds Marcus of when he explains that before the banks took away Texan land for oil, Texans took the same land from the Comanche tribe for their own personal gain. Because it isn’t just a story about a couple of brothers looking out for their family. Instead, Hell or High Water approaches the film with medium shots and shies away from quick cuts so that viewers can experience the towns and culture of West Texas. These characters turn this small town, quiet heist movie into an exhilarating adventure. Especially when they have police officer Marcus and partner Alberto, played brilliantly by Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham, trailing their moves until they can maneuver themselves one-step ahead of the criminals. But their actions aren’t going to go unpunished. They’re in a tough spot, their hearts are in the right place, and they’re trying to get the job done without hurting anyone in the process. ![]() Like many successful anti-hero stories, Thelma and Louise and Breaking Bad to name a couple, Toby and Tanner embody the best traits of some of our favorite characters. Toby, played by a greased up and worn down Chris Pine, gets his ex-convict brother Tanner, played by a frustratingly wild and comedic Ben Foster, to help him carry out a plan to steal from the banks that have kept so many West Texan families, including his own, in poverty. Hell or High Water, directed by David Mackenzie (Starred Up) and written by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario) is one of this summer’s best films. This is one of a set number of robberies that audiences will witness over the course of the film. A beat up blue sports car drives slowly, thoughtfully through the blank streets until it reaches a bank where a woman is fumbling with her keys to open shop. With a 360 pan of what appears to be a small deserted town, graffiti tagged on buildings, empty storefronts, and boarded up windows, viewers are immediately dropped into the main characters’ world. The motivation is unknown but we’re already interested because cinematographer Giles Nuttgens has introduced viewers to three main elements of the film: brothers Tanner and Toby, bank robberies, and West Texas. The two leads taking part in their first bank robbery. ![]()
